By Air

The nearest airport to Katra is Jammu Airport (IXJ), also known as Satwari Airport. It is well-connected to major cities in India. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a pre-paid taxi to reach Katra. The distance between Jammu Airport and Katra is approximately 50 kilometers, and it takes around 1-2 hours to reach by road, depending on traffic conditions.

By Rail

The nearest railway station to Katra is Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station (SVDK). It is well-connected to major cities in India. Many trains pass through Katra. Once you reach the railway station, taxi and auto-rickshaw services are available to reach the Vaishno Devi Temple. The temple is located in the Trikuta Hills, and it requires a trek of approximately 13 kilometers from Katra to reach the temple. Ponies and palanquins are also available for hire if needed.

By Road

Katra is well-connected by road to major cities in Jammu and Kashmir and neighboring states. You can reach Katra by private car, bus, or taxi. The National Highway 44 connects Katra to Jammu and other cities. Regular bus services are available from Jammu and other nearby cities to Katra. Taxi and private car services are available for a more comfortable journey.

Getting Around

Katra is a town in the Reasi district of the Indian Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, situated at the foot of the Trikuta Mountains, where the shrine of Vaishno Devi is located. From Katra town, the pilgrims have to undertake a trek of nearly 13 km from the base camp. Ponies, horses, and palanquins are available for those who cannot or prefer not to walk. These can be used for a part or the entire journey, but availability may vary, especially during peak seasons. Another option is to take a helicopter ride from Katra to Sanjichhat, which is closer to the temple. This reduces the walking distance to around 2.5 kilometers. Helicopter services need to be booked in advance and are subject to weather conditions. Electric vehicles are available for a portion of the journey from the base camp to Ardhkuwari, which is about halfway to the temple. These vehicles can be a convenient option for those who may have difficulty walking long distances. Once you reach the temple complex, the area is relatively small and can be explored on foot. There are designated paths and walkways within the complex. One can visit the nearby Shalimar Park, Raghunath Temple, Mahalakshmi Mandir, Chinta Mani Temple, Kalika Temple, and Bhumika Mandir, which have historical importance and are places of Tourist interests around Katra.

Do's

Obtain a Yatra Parchi (slip) free of cost from the Yatra Registration Counter before proceeding with the trek. No one is allowed to proceed beyond the Ban Ganga check post without it.
Pilgrims are requested to check the real rates of Dandi-Kandi, Horses/ Mules before hiring. Also, they should have their valid registration card.
Please leave all unnecessary clothes and luggage at Katra itself and travel light. Food, drink, and blankets are freely available on the route.
Cooperate with security agencies for security checks. Beware of suspicious persons and unclaimed articles and report the same to the security personnel.
Pilgrims with any kind of medical problems are strongly advised against using the stairs.
On arrival at Holy Bhawan, obtain the Group Number at the Yatra slip check post to get into the queue for Darshans.
Proceed for Darshans only when the Group Number is announced and avoid crowding for Darshans at Gate number 1. Freshen up and wear clean clothes before proceeding to the Darshans.
Deposit donations in the donation boxes kept at various locations or the computerized donation counters.
Darshans at Bhairav Nath temple are done only after Darshans at the Holy Cave.

Don'ts

Video cameras and other electronic gadgets are not allowed on the route.
Avoid loud dresses, vulgar language, or offensive talk or gestures. Please do not treat it as a picnic or a vacation.
Refrain from smoking, liquor, chewing tobacco, and betel leaves, spitting, spreading litter, playing cards, etc.
Avoid carrying too much cash, jewelry, and valuables, and don't trust strangers with belongings.
Don't write on the walls. Mutilating or damaging property is a legally punishable offense with both fines and imprisonment.
Avoid the usage of plastic bags during the Yatra and don't dirty the region.
Chanting of slogans or praises inside the cave is not allowed as it disturbs the other pilgrims.
Don't offer any cash or jewelry in front of the Holy Pindies. Instead, deposit the same in the donation/jewelry boxes.
